Royal Free Charity Covid-19 Emergency Appeal
The Covid-19 crisis is continuing to place staff at our three hospitals – Barnet, Chase Farm and the Royal Free - under unprecedented pressure. They are dealing with significant challenges, including the loss of patients to this devastating illness, deep concern for colleagues who have become unwell and very high stress levels. Their response has been inspirational, demonstrating a profound commitment to the NHS and to our community, caring for our loved ones with kindness and compassion.
And yet the crisis has taken an undeniable toll. Many are now suffering from mental health challenges including trauma, anxiety and insomnia, as they cope not just with pressures at work but with the impact of the past few months on their home lives. A significant number have also been disproportionately affected by the economic downturn – in many cases becoming the sole earner – and are facing financial hardship.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, and by working in close consultation with the trust, the charity has been able to provide staff with what need to make life a little more bearable during this difficult time.
• The creation of a free ‘supermarket’ for our front-line staff in The Royal Free recreation club sports hall. This has allowed them, throughout the Covid-19 crisis, to get the fresh fruit and vegetables, milk and bread and other staples that they require. The staggering 52,758 staff visits and the provision of 293,068 free items is testament to the need, and to the effectiveness of this initiative
• The preparation and delivery of 120 prepared meals per day for staff who are working in high-risk wards and are unable to come to the shop
• The provision of 16 fully furnished REST (Resilience and Emotional Support) areas. These have been greatly utilised and hugely appreciated at a time when hospitals have been turned upside down to accommodate the unprecedented and urgent patient needs
These acts of kindness have been so appreciated by staff and, hand-in-hand with the trust, we are more determined than ever to continue supporting them, as the day-to-day realities of dealing with Covid-19 continue to affect them. Please help us help them by continuing to donate whatever you can. Every penny will go towards embedding comprehensive psychological support across our 10,000-strong workforce, enabling individuals and teams to reflect on what has happened, to come to terms with it and to build resilience. Your support will also be used to fund much-needed recreational outings and treats for staff to enjoy with their families who are facing financial challenges.
And we will ensure you hear how your generosity is helping, keeping you closely updated on our discussions with the trust about the on-going challenges related to Covid-19 and what our staff will need in the future.
Thank you for your support and for continuing to help our local NHS heroes as they embark on the long road to recovery.
Please note that any surplus funds from the COVID-19 appeal will be used to support staff across the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
